Red Bulls Hand Chivas USA First Win!!!

Carson , California – The New York Red Bulls played their worst game of this season as they lost 2-0 to Chivas USA. The Red Bulls team that appeared on the pitch was reminiscent of the 2009 Red Bulls. They were simply out-classed and out-hustled by Chivas who desperately needed a win today. After playing a scoreless first half, the Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul gave Chivas USA the lead by mishandling the ball which led to his own goal. This goal ended Coundoul’s 227-minute streak without allowing a goal and ironically provided Chivas USA their first goal of the season. Jesus Padilla of Chivas USA was credited for Coundoul’s own goal. Throughout the game, the Red Bulls were off on their passes and they weren’t able to create the necessary space to get a shot off. After beginning the season aggressively, Joel Lindpere performance was flat today. His passes were off and he appeared tired throughout the match. For the second straight week, striker Juan Pablo Angel struggled and has yet to score a goal this season. New York’s best chance of tying the match came in the 73rd minute when newly signed forward Salou Ibrahim missed an open shot from eight ...

Edson Buddle’s World Cup Audition Continues Against Houston

Houston, you have a problem. And Bob Bradley—heh—you have yourself a blessing...a big blessing, and as a disguise he wears the #14 for a team called the Los Angeles Galaxy. You may not realize this for sure until you check out the news just in on Bleacher Report and elsewhere, but Edson Buddle could be the savior of the USA Men's National Team this year. There's no disguising this stat for starters: Buddle has accounted for all five goals in their three victories in this young 2010 Major League Soccer season. With Charlie Davies recovering from his injuries and Brian Ching getting dinged for a month on the sidelines, maybe it's time for Bradley to give Buddle his shot against the Czechs and Turks. Who knows; Buddle's golden touch could make all the difference against Slovenia and Algeria, if not the bloody Brits. That brings up another situation: what if Bradley does give Buddle his shot? And-cue the gasp-Buddle IS called on to the World Cup roster with Landon Donovan (who certainly will be on this team, one way or the other, barring an Act of Bob)? Hmmm...that means contingency time, Bruce "Almighty" Arena. Here's hoping that ...

Los Angeles-Houston: A Play-By-Play (and Other Miscellany)

T minus 30 minutes to kickoff: The Los Angeles Galaxy are on the road this week to take on the Houston Dynamo, who are feeling the pinch from Brian Ching being out for a month due to injury and Cam Weaver getting a knock in training earlier this week. Two key players to watch out for are Brad Davis and Luis Angel Landin. Landin is a proven scorer from the spot, having proven himself against Real Salt Lake last week. Davis has tallied seven goals and 13 assists in his last 28 regular season contests and will be marked by Sean Franklin. T-25: Edson Buddle will look to add to his goal total, while Landon Donovan looks to add a goal to his assist tally. This match will be on tape delay on the West Coast on Fox Soccer Channel, but I will provide the action live via a delay of ten or so minutes to upload this. You know how things work. T-20: Line-ups: LOS ANGELES GALAXY Manager: Bruce Arena Formation: 4-4-2 Colors: White tops, white shorts, white socks 1 Donovan Ricketts     4 Omar Gonzalez ---- 20 A.J. De La Garza ---- 22 Leonardo ---- 2 Todd Dunivant     28 Sena Franklin ---- 11 Birchall --- 19 --- Juninho --- 18 ...

The Revolution Was Televised

For the New England Revolution fan that, like me, was not fortunate enough to make the stadium today, there was a question as to whether or not we’d tonight’s game on TV.  You see, some green/white basketball team apparently had a game at the same time.   Luckily, some odd arrangements were made by all involved  (Thank you!) and even on my not-so-glamorous Charter Communications cable, I was able to watch. So not only was the (New England) Revolution televised, but it was a bit of a Revolution on the field.  Against what?  Against the pessimism that most Revs fans have had about this season...and potentially against the status quo on the field. The pessimism was palpable a few weeks ago. Steve Ralston is gone? Paul Mariner is no longer prowls the sidelines? Jay Heaps is an announcer, not a defender? Jeff Larentowicz is not part of red-and-dread anymore? Matt Reis is hurt? Taylor Twellman is still perpetually dizzy? Hopes were at rock-bottom.   Then however, a few things happened.  The Revs visited the Los Angeles Galaxy  and “only” lost 1-0 – and that without Shalrie Joseph in the lineup.  Then the Revs went to D.C. United and Kenny Mansally wowed everyone watching by pulling a 2-0 victory out of an ...

Philadelphia Union-D.C. United: Le Toux’s Hat Trick Leads Union To First Victory

Sebastien Le Toux tripled his goal amount from last season in one game in front of 34,870 fans at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday night. The French forward began the scoring early with a fourth-minute header into the back of the net off of a Roger Torres free kick. Thrity six minutes later, Le Toux became the recipient of a Alejandro Moreno pass that left him wide open, and he slotted the ball past D.C. United goalie Troy Perkins. After a disappointing start to the second half by the Union, which was fueled by the insertion of Jaime Moreno in to the United lineup, and giving up two goals to United—scored by Santino Quaranta and Moreno—Le Toux electrified the crowd once more by scoring his third goal on a free kick right outside the box. Le Toux was pulled down by D.C. defender Dejan Jakovic, who was sent off. Le Toux was not the only bright spot on the pitch for the Union tonight. Peter Novak saw solid performances from Alejandro Moreno, Roger Torres, Danny Califf, and sub Shea Salinas. Moreno provided Le Toux with his second goal with a cross-field pass that found the Frenchman wide open. Torres set up the first goal from his ...

MLS Game of The Week Preview: Seattle Sounders FC Vs. Real Salt Lake

Coming into Saturday night's RSL home-opener at Rio Tinto, both teams are coming off of tough losses that put a temporary halt in the momentum each had from week one wins. For Sigi Schmid's Sounders side, a home tie with the Red Bulls was supposed to be a lock for a win, but that was not the case. After a Macoumba Kandji goal in the first half for the Red Bulls, and some passes that barely missed teammates and shots that barley missed goal, the Sounders fell 1-0 after a week-one win over the expansion Philadelphia Union. Real Salt Lake had the worst luck of all MLS teams this season so far at Robertson Stadium in Houston last Thursday. Jamison Olave had the worst luck of all. Olave was called for two penalties within a span of five minutes by referee Jair Marrufo. Brad Davis converted on both of those penalties, giving Houston the 2-1 advantage which they held onto for the rest of the match. Keys to Game for Seattle: 1. Midfielders need to be more accurate with passing. During the second half against the Red Bulls, the Sounders had many chances to score, but could not get either the pass or shot down ...

Union Already Beloved in City of Brotherly Love Before Opener

The newest franchise in Major League Soccer makes their home debut tomorrow and it will try to match the one of the 2009 expansion team, the Seattle Sounders. With the same type of support that Seattle had in their first season, the Union are poised to succeed at home. Philadelphia fans have a reputation for being the most supportive of their sports teams. But at the same time, they also have a reputation for getting on an athlete's case if the performance is not up to their standards. The supporters group, Sons of Ben, has been behind the Union even before its official inception on May 11, 2009. The supporters section at the new PPL Park, which opens June 27th against the Sounders, has been sold out for quite some time and the club had to cut off season-ticket sales because they were selling so quickly. The Sons of Ben will have to travel for all except two games until the opening of PPL Park, with the exception of Saturday's game against DC United and a May 15th match with FC Dallas, both games being played at Lincoln Financial Field. After June 27th, the Union will host 14 home games that will be filled ...

New York Red Bulls Steal One from Seattle Sounders

If you just looked at the stat sheet after the match, you would have thought that the Seattle Sounders FC won by two or three goals, and that the New York Red Bulls were a frustrated squad committing 22 fouls in the match. New York’s Macoumba Kandji was left unmarked in the center of the penalty area and placed a perfect shot off the underside of the crossbar to help his team sneak out of Qwest Field with a 1-0 win. Sounders FC took 17 shots and could not find the inside of the net once in a match. Seattle led in all of the statistical categories at the end of the match which brought a sense of frustration to the team after the match. “It's frustrating, we're all extremely frustrated but I don't think you can fault the guys' effort,” said goalkeeper Kasey Keller after the match. No one is questioning the effort of the men in green, but there were a total of 34 free kicks and corner kicks in the match, and with just the run of play there should have been a goal scored. “We had a ton of corners, we had a ton of free kicks, we need to be ...

Houston Dynamo 2, Real Salt Lake 1: Dynamic Davis Dethrones Champs

Robertson Stadium was sporting a sea of “Forever Orange” on Houston Dynamo Day. Supporter groups, season ticket holders, and newcomers were all part of 18,000+ strong fans in attendance for the 2010 home opener versus the 2009 MLS Cup Champion Real Salt Lake. Fans were anxiously waiting this date for months; the Dynamo could not wait to start at home, a field where they lose rarely. Although the night started festive, there was little time to celebrate. The Dynamo began the season the previous week at FC Dallas and left Frisco with a 1-1 tie in the Texan Derby. After game day opening celebrations concluded, the 22 men on John O’ Quinn field starting things off to a fast tempo. Fans were chanting “Let’s Go Dynamo!” as the Orange Crush was in a battle of possession for most part of the first half. That is, until the 17th minute when RSL’s Argentinean striker Javier Morales took advantage of a defensive mishap by the home team and shot one with ease past Pat Onstad into the right corner of the net to put the defending Champions in the lead 1-0. Looking carefully at the play: ...
