Red Bulls Academy Battle Cosmos Academy East for the First Time on Mother’s Day

Aviator Field, Brooklyn - For the first time ever, Red Bulls and Cosmos fans alike were treated to an afternoon doubleheader of soccer at Aviator Field as they watched the New York Red Bulls Academy U-18 and U-16 teams face their river rival, the Cosmos Academy East.On a Mother's Day that was beautiful and warm, both Cosmos and Red Bulls fans witnessed each team record a victory over the other. As families ushered themselves to the stands, every mother in attendance was given a yellow carnation in honor of their day. While the gesture was nice and endearing, I believe the fans in attendance could've used a little more cowbell. Granted there was a fan with his vuvuzela but it's really annoying when it's only one individual literally tooting his own horn. Plus, it's a tool used to disrupt one team's flow.As crazy as this may sound, one of the best things about watching a soccer game at a place like Aviator Field is that you're gonna want that cowbell on the track. Nothing is more enticing than watching two teams move the ball and hearing the powerful tapping sound of a cowbell every time the ball is passed. If you enjoy ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Philadelphia Union: A Taste of Their Own Doop?

In Philadelphia Union circles, the phrase Beat L.A. has replaced by "Doop L.A." The word "Doop," which has its origins in the German techno band Scooter, has been embraced as a tradition of some sorts by Philadelphia Union supporters, notably the Sons of Ben.Of course, the verb can be a noun, and on Wednesday, May 11, Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy will aim to give Peter Nowak's Union a taste of their own doop when they do battle at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.The Galaxy are still first overall in the league with a 4-2-4 record (16 points) but are winless in their last two matches. LA is coming off a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls. As for the Union, they are 4-2-1 (13 points) and have won just two out of their last five contests. Philly will aim to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat on the road to the Portland Timbers on Friday. The Union will need to increase their scoring production and test the volatile Galaxy back line. Carlos Ruiz leads the team with two goals, while Danny Mwanga and Sebastien Le Toux each have an assist to their credit. With defender Jordan Harvey back in action ...

Edvin Jurisevic Steals Victory from LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls

I'll be honest with you: Edvin Jurisevic is not qualified enough to make calls on the field. The fact that Jurisevic and other whistle-blowing buffoons like Hilario Grajeda, Jair Marrufo, Abbey Okulaja and Baldomero Toledo will be officiating many a Major League Soccer match to come will only further damage the quality and relevancy of this league. I kid you not.Case in point: the 1-1 draw on Saturday night between the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls, and the 44th minute in particular.Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul should have paid the price for coming off his line, and Landon Donovan should have completed a first-half brace. But the would-be goal was said to have been cleared, when in fact it was over the line.Even a Red Bull fan will have to admit that this had a defeat wrapped up for them as a result of their inability to add to their early goal in the first half.Instead, a slob like Edvin Jurisevic has done something that should be reserved for the players only: determine the outcome of a game and also force a draw. Disgraceful, no question. If you were to ask me what my three wishes are right now, ...

Real Salt Lake Beats Chivas USA, Loses Playmaker Javier Morales

In a rare afternoon game for Real Salt Lake, they were able to take advantage of a great opportunity by putting in a needed goal while playing much of the game up two men. After battling the eight-man Chivas USA defense for most of the second half, and after having multiple scoring chances fall away, Will Johnson finally punched in the only goal of the match for a 1-0 victory over the visitors. While Real Salt Lake did get the win and was able to move to 15 points in just six matches, the news of the day was another major injury to an elite Major League Soccer player. Playing down a man due to two yellow cards shown to teammate Andrew Boyens, Chivas forward Marcos Mondaini needlessly and recklessly tackled fellow Argentine Javier Morales after being beaten near the corner of the box.It appeared that as Morales planted to shoot, Mondaini slid into the back of his leg and ankle to break up the play. Not only did he break up the play, he broke Morales' ankle, and sent him to the bench for what looks to be the remainder of the season. Morales was immediately taken to the ...

MLS: Teemu Tainio to Be Missed When New York Red Bulls Face Los Angeles Galaxy

When the New York Red Bulls square off against the Los Angeles Galaxy, offense will be at a premium.Landon Donovan, Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Juan Agudelo, Juan Pablo Angel and Luke Rodgers are all names that should see action and they all bring it in the attacking third.Good offenses are fueled by teams that are capable of playing good defense, transitioning to offense, and possessing the ball. So New York not having Teemu Tainio is a huge loss and could have a great effect on the outcome of the match. He did not travel with the club to Los Angeles because of a groin injury. The Finnish International was signed by the Red Bulls before the season started in March and has a long history of playing soccer at the highest level. He’s played in the UEFA Champions League with Auxerre, a club he spent eight years with, making 150 appearances for the team. Then he moved onto the English Premier League with Tottenham for three years. He rounded out his European career with Sunderland, Birmingham City in England and Ajax, the famous club from Amsterdam. The signing with New York was a quiet one, and he had to go on trial with them ...
