MLS: 10 Things We Learned This Weekend
There was plenty of entertainment in MLS this weekend. The conference leaders earned wins, youngsters impressed and lightning strikes forced two teams to play into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Refereeing performances were also criticized after two major decisions affected Real Salt Lake's game against the Vancouver Whitecaps. MLS Team of the Week: Giovinco, Martins and Castillo Shine in Week 7
After a slow first six weeks of the season, Major League Soccer found its attacking pulse in Week 7. Stars such as Sebastian Giovinco and Obafemi Martins delivered world-class strikes in a week that saw 26 goals fly into the back of the net. MLS: Keys to Every Game in Week 7
MLS Week 7 started early with New York City FC hosting the Philadelphia Union on Thursday in a rematch from last Saturday. Friday's UniMas game features the undefeated New York Red Bulls against the San Jose Earthquakes at Red Bull Arena. Saturday has a full slate of matches, beginning with D.C. United and the Houston Dynamo and culminating with the LA Galaxy welcoming Sporting Kansas City in the late kickoff. The MLS weekend is over with several interesting storylines emerging in the aftermath of the games. Orlando City SC defeated the Portland Timbers as the Lions recorded their second win of the season. Meanwhile, the LA Galaxy snapped their four-game winless skid after topping the Seattle Sounders at the Stubhub Center on Sunday. The Vancouver Whitecaps' four-match winning streak ended in San Jose on Saturday. The New York Red Bulls overturned a 2-0 deficit to draw their fierce rival D.C. United earlier in the day, plus the Philadelphia Union and Colorado Rapids earned their first victories of the campaign. MLS Player Rankings: Golden Boot Leader Rivero Takes Back Top Spot
If the current trend continues, the race for the Golden Boot and the top spot in our weekly Major League Soccer Player Rankings may be over before it started. Vancouver Whitecaps forward Octavio Rivero extended the impressive start to his MLS career in Week 6 by scoring his fifth strike of the young season. MLS Team of the Week: Penedo, Powers & Sarvas Star in Week 6
When we first looked at the schedule for Week 6 in Major League Soccer, we expected the big names to shine in marquee matches. After the dust settled on the weekend, we were left talking about some surprising individual performances. LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo turned in a gem in net against the Seattle Sounders, while the Colorado Rapids shocked everyone around the league with a big win over FC Dallas on Friday night. There were also a plentiful amount of standout showings in midfield, which led us to choose a 3-5-2 formation for the best 11 of the weekend.
