Los Angeles Galaxy Ins and Outs, March 27, 2012

Back in business for LA This week, it was back to work for the Los Angeles Galaxy, who were prepping for Saturday's contest with the New England Revolution (8 p.m. PT/11 p.m. ET, NBC Sports). Along the way, the team has been able to gel and develop some chemistry. “We never kind of caught a rhythm because of fatigue and all that kind of stuff,” manager Bruce Arena told LAGalaxy.com's Larry Morgan. For the Galaxy, it has been a long, grueling start to the year and for Arena, the team just had to get on with it. “No excuses,” Arena said. “It’s a little bit better now to have this where we get a little bit of training in and get to know each other a little better. “We needed a little bit of rest.” With Michael Stephens returning to the club after a dismal Olympics qualifying run, three players are missing from the roster: Omar Gonzalez, who is expected to miss most of the season after undergoing knee surgery in January, fellow center back Leonardo, who is coming back from major knee surgery of his own last April, and goalkeeper Brian Perk, sidelined 4-6 weeks after sports hernia surgery. “We ...

"The two-week break that we have now is big for the whole team, to be honest," Galaxy midfielder David Beckham added. Los Angeles Galaxy vs. D.C. United: Rating David Beckham’s Performance

You have to love players that believe in that one simple word: improvement. David Beckham, for all of the honors he has accomplished in his long storied career, is a player that continues to improve his game, even at the age of 37. On Sunday, against D.C. United at the Home Depot Center, the LA Galaxy midfielder—the man that changed the face of MLS indelibly in more ways that one—put on a much more solid performance and could have earned more en route to a 3-1 victory. Beckham had two chances to get on the score sheet: one on the run of play, and the other off the set piece. The first just sailed over the crossbar while the second missed the top left corner by a foot or less. Never mind that the Galaxy had six corners compared to D.C.'s three. Most importantly, Beckham is a provider, and he recorded his second assist in as many games by helping Marcelo Sarvas open his MLS scoring account in the 86th minute. Beckham's stamina and excellent play have been a hallmark of his game for many years, and the 18,000-plus that were in attendance saw firsthand why he gets all the ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. D.C. United: Rating the Galaxy Players

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy recorded what many will hope to be the first of many wins in 2012 with a 3-1 victory over D.C. United at the Home Depot Center on Sunday afternoon. This was a much better performance from Los Angeles, the type of performance fans were used to seeing last year. The Galaxy put all the pieces together and now have plenty of confidence heading into the two-week break. Here are the player ratings for the Galaxy players.  Josh Saunders 8In all honesty, it could have been higher had Saunders made a stop on Nick De Leon late. But for the most part, Josh Saunders made enough stops and relieved the struggling back line of the dirty work in the closing moments of the match. This is the type performance that will help Saunders this season. Next objective: first shutout of the year.  Sean Franklin 7A better outing from the defender. Really frustrated D.C. on the right side of the field. Not a bad night from Franklin.  Andrew Boyens 6Boyens would have had a very low score had D.C. converted the giveaways he surrendered. The good thing for Boyens is that D.C. are worse when it comes ...

LA Galaxy vs. Toronto FC: Rating David Beckham’s Performance

David Beckham, earlier this week you said that you wanted to remain a champion until you hang up your cleats and retire from the world game. Losing matches left and right is not going to fulfill that promise you made to yourself, now is it? Case in point: Exhibit B, the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2-1 defeat to the champions of Canada—Canada, of all places!—Toronto FC in the second leg of the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. (Seriously, the CCL has officially been turned on its head. Now there can be as much as a 75 percent chance of the trophy remaining in Mexico, and a 25 percent chance it could remain in the same city. Yep, some things never change. By the way, Exhibit A was the 3-1 defeat to Real Salt Lake.) Once more, the set piece slot machine that Beckham strategically placed in the corners, the Galaxy's attacking third, and the corners again were cranked, turned...and resulted in a payoff of nil. You know, Beckham can have as many as 30 set-piece opportunities in a match—that's right, a big three-zero—and not a single one will be converted. That's just how futile he ...
