Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Chicago Fire: Stopping the Drought

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy are a team without direction, even though it's just the middle of April, and nothing is certain yet in this 2011 Major League Soccer season.Though they come into this Sunday's encounter with Carlos de los Cobos' Chicago Fire on a three-game unbeaten streak, they stumble into Bridgeview's Toyota Park unbowed but wounded. The Galaxy are winless in their last two games. Landon Donovan is overcoming an injury from national team duty, and a couple of key players in Juninho and David Beckham are serving suspensions. While they do have Juan Pablo Angel (who most likely will don the captain's armband on Sunday for the G's if Donovan is not available), the Colombian international has yet to be a dominating force on the team, and opposing defenses have had their way.One player that could step up on Sunday is Mike Magee, who was instrumental in the 1-1 draw with D.C. United.“We have a deep team, so we haven’t missed too many beats,” Magee told Luis Bueno of MLSSoccer.com. “Obviously, Landon is a guy you’ll never be able to replace, but the team has done well. Throughout the course of the year, whether it’s been Omar [Gonzalez] or Landon, other ...

LA Galaxy’s Wasteful Finishing Results in Scoreless Draw with Toronto

Another match with Toronto FC, another scoreless draw with Toronto FC. And this match adds to the argument which states this Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy still lack the ability to finish their chances.Set pieces. Corners. The transition. All wasted in horrendous fashion. What could have been 3-0 ended up in doughnuts. I'm telling you, this is a Galaxy side that makes hitting the woodwork an artform in itself."We have got a long way to go," Arena said after the match. "Certainly when you walk off the field and you don’t have three points you know you have a lot of work ahead of you and we do.""Like I said before the game, there is a bunch of excitement, obviously I was ready to go," said former Toronto FC and current Galaxy forward Chad Barrett.  "I thought the team did very well today, we came out, we forced them out, and we pressed the game. "We got a little open there at the end but we have to try to push forward and score a goal.  I think that we were the better team and I think we deserved more than what we got here."Same old, same old, same old. ...

Los Angeles Galaxy Ins and Outs, April 13, 2011

More Time for Becks in MLS?It looks like Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham may not be ready to call it a career just yet. Next year could be Beckham's final season after all."Yeah, you know, there’s a chance," Beckham told MLSSoccer.com's Duane Rollins. "I haven’t made any decision about what I’m going to do after this year. At the end of the day, I am 35-years-old, I’ll be 36 in May and I’m getting older, so I’ll need to see how my body feels at the end of the season, and if I feel that I can perform and continue, then I will continue."Beckham had been pleased with the improved caliber of play in the league."I think it’s definitely gone up,"  Beckham said. "You’ve got improved [player] performances and improved team performances and the way the league has gone...with the franchises that have come into this league."The addition of players like the New York Red Bulls' Thierry Henry raises the profile of MLS, according to Beckham."It can only do good and promote the sport and obviously the MLS," Beckham said. The goal of Los Angeles winning the MLS Cup has always been on his mind. 2011 MLS Power Rankings: Week 4

Bad officiating? What bad officiating? Poppycock. That's just men with the speed of tree trunks trying to get a bonus to their meager stipends by carding as many as they can, while in the process, compromising the quality of officiating in this league we call Major League Soccer.Cheeky.All joking, frivolous claims and water cooler jibjab aside, Real Salt Lake is back on top for another week in our 2011 MLS Power Rankings. If Brigham Young ever considered playing football or some variant of it in his lifetime, he would make a good goalkeeper, but that's just this ranker's opinion. Here's this week's MLS Power Rankings on B/R. LA Galaxy Throw Away Lead, Settle for 1-1 Draw With D.C. United

Well, this sure wasn't the best way to start a three-game road swing.I mean, you would expect a team like the Los Angeles Galaxy to hold on to a 1-0 lead after nobodies like Mike Magee become somebodies by connecting on the simplest of set pieces from busybodies like David Beckham. They had the lead for the lion's share of the match and were even a man down. Solid defending, timely dispossession. And then tragedy struck.A penalty conceded to D.C. United and here comes Charlie Davies. The new and improved Charlie Davies, fresh out of FC Sochaux on loan, ready for one swing of the foot because some lout didn't stay on his feet in the D.C. attacking third.Davies can convert penalties in his sleep. In fact, I bet you that if he wins the Budweiser Golden Boot, it's because he was able to convert his penalties, and his penalties constitute a majority of his goals.Oh, and just so that Abbey Okulaja wants to make things fair, he decides to red card one of the liabilities to the team, namely Jovan Kirovski. Well done, Dr. Okulaja. You have epitomized the opinion that the officiating in Major League Soccer is disgraceful and in ...

Los Angeles Galaxy Ins and Outs: April 7, 2011

At Ease, Captain...Los Angeles Galaxy captain Landon Donovan, was given time to recuperate from a grueling set of friendlies for the U.S. Men's National Team, who drew 1-1 with Argentina and lost 1-0 to Paraguay."Landon's getting a little rest," said manager Bruce Arena to MLSSoccer.com's Luis Bueno after Wednesday's practice session. “He had a long week last week, with two international [games] and the Philly game. He doesn't need to be out here."The team leaves Los Angeles today for a 10-day road trip which includes matches against D.C. United, Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire. Before Arena and assistant coach Dave Sarachan decided to give Donovan the start against the Philadelphia Union (whom they defeated 1-0 last Saturday), they both weighed their options."We could have kept him out of the Philly game or just given him some rest this week," Arena said."It’s early in the year where we can be more cautious," Sarachan added. "We're hopeful [that he will be in the lineup this weekend]. We’re kind of seeing where that all plays out, but we hope he is [in the lineup]."Will the G's dominate the East again?Last year, the Los Angeles Galaxy had been getting their way against the MLS ...
