Los Angeles Galaxy vs. D.C. United: G’s Look to Deal More of the Same

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy have had success last season against D.C. United, but will find it a bit tougher when the travel to RFK Stadium to face an improved D.C. outfit. The Galaxy are coming off a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union and take on a D.C. United team that got hammered 4-1 by the new league leaders, the defending MLS Cup Champion Colorado Rapids.“The performance was more important [Saturday] than anything else,” David Beckham told Luis Bueno of MLSSoccer.com after their win over the Union. “We wanted the three points of course, but after the embarrassment of last week, the performance was the important thing—and the character—and I think we showed that.“We came out at the start of the game better than we did last game. We needed that, we needed a good start to the game. We started with a hard tempo and continued that, even when we went down to 10 men. We needed to show even more character and I think we did that.”“Our experienced guys did well in the second half, understanding what needed to be done to get the three points,” Arena said. “Landon I thought played very well. … Landon’s experience, David and [Juan ...

LA Galaxy Overcomes Tumultuous Second Half, Shuts Out Philadelphia Union 1-0

Well, Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy prove me wrong for yet another week. This time, it was all for the right reasons. The other Brazilian on the Galaxy's roster, Leonardo, broke through for his first-ever goal on a set piece from David Beckham in the 33rd minute to give Los Angeles a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union. But the person on the pitch who really stole the show on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center was the match referee, Mr. Paul Ward.Ward issued 10 cards, all drawn out during the second half. This had to be his way of saying, "I don't care if you are a designated player or a deadbeat off the street playing the game for the first time. I will card you and I can't be reprimanded because players and coaches get fined for criticizing my abusal of my leet card-issuing abilities. Boo-yah!"Well, that's a casual way of putting it, but this was a tad too excessive.I found it hilarious that the "Chicken Thief" from last year's game at the Home Depot Center, Jack McInerney, got sent off by Ward late in stoppage time, as if it was a last-ditch face-saving attempt to placate the home ...

Los Angeles Galaxy Ins and Outs, March 30, 2011

Just like old times...Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham remembered scoring against current Philadelphia Union goalkeeper and Colombian international Faryd Mondragon. The year was 1998. The event: the FIFA World Cup in France. As a member of England's national team, Beckham scored on a set piece to beat Mondragon. England went on to win that match 2-0 in what was Becks's first start.“I wasn’t actually that nervous,” Beckham recalled after practice on Tuesday, according to Larry Morgan of LAGalaxy.com. “I was ready to play in the World Cup. I had prepared myself and I was ready to go. I was excited more than nervous.“It meant a lot to me that game, scoring my first goal for England, playing in my first World Cup and it was my mum’s birthday. It was kind of special in many ways. It was a good day.”Mondragon, now the team captain for the Union, remembered the day so well.“I remember it was the third game of the group, and we needed a draw or a win to advance and England needed to win,” Mondragon recalled. “And, well, we were down 1-0 and around the 30-minute mark there was a free kick from about 27 or 30 ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Philadelphia Union: Taking on the Upstarts

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy slink back to the Home Depot Center in search of the antidote to cure them of their ills suffered from a 4-1 defeat to Real Salt Lake. Who may have the antidote? It could be Peter Nowak's Philadelphia Union, who the Galaxy take on this Saturday. The Union are currently 2-0 to begin the year and are coming off a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. This is a much improved Union outfit from last year, especially with additions like goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon and former Galaxy striker Carlos Ruiz. “We came out poorly, there’s no question about that," Arena told RealSaltLake.com. "We turned the ball over and made some bad plays and they capitalized. The second goal off the penalty kick I think was a terrible call by the referee, but it didn’t certainly didn’t cost us the game. We were completely outplayed in the first half and we were punished properly.” “It wasn’t a good game overall," said Juan Pablo Angel on last Saturday's dismal effort against RSL. "We didn’t start off the game well and we got punished by it. We made mistakes and they capitalized on our mistakes. We’ve got to make sure we start off ...

Real Salt Lake Are Unstoppable in 4-1 Victory over Los Angeles Galaxy

A "suicide mission" this was called to become, and a suicide mission this ended up becoming.Last year, early in the season at that, the question was this: Can anybody stop the Los Angeles Galaxy? This year, the question is this: Can anybody stop Real Salt Lake? And somewhere out in San Jose, Costa Rica, a certain team wearing purple stripes is taking a deep breath and a big gulp: Jason Kreis's Real Salt Lake team are the real deal. They made the Galaxy look like a ragtag group of overpaid prima donnas, crushing LA to the tune of 4-1. And this came from successfully incorporating their brand of football, which involved excellent pace and speed, superior ball movement, timely defending from their backline with stops from goalkeeper Nick Rimando, and clinical finishing.Last year at Rio Tinto, Javier Morales was the culprit in stopping the winning streak for the Galaxy. This year, Morales wasn't the only one in on the party. While Morales got his goals in the 10th and 41st minute, Andy Williams broke open the scoring just less than 120 seconds into the match. Paulo Araujo, Jr. added an insurance goal in the 68th minute of play. The Galaxy's Juan Pablo Angel added ...
