MLS Weekend Wrap

Not to be outdone by their counterparts from across the pond this weekend, Major League Soccer provided plenty of thrills in nine league matches.  The biggest of those thrills came from an old veteran of the English Premier League, Robbie Keane, who scored a hat-trick for the Galaxy in their come-from-behind win over Real Salt Lake. In the Eastern Conference, Marco Di Vaio and Federico Higuain stepped to the forefront and recorded two goals each in their club's wins over D.C. and Toronto. Who else shined this weekend in MLS? Week 24 MLS Power Rankings

As the Clint Dempsey era in Major League Soccer officially began, the stars of the league rose to the occasion and shined brightly on the league's biggest stage. Fans of Major League Soccer fans were left seeing double on Saturday night as three players found the back of the net twice. Federico Higuain, Conor Casey and Kei Kamara all scored twice in their respective club's victories. Charlie Davies: Can the Former USMNT Forward Revive His Career in MLS Again?

Four years is considered a large timespan in the world of soccer, but for fans of the United States men's national team, the star of 2009 will always hold a place in their memories. In 2009, a bright young prospect by the name of Charlie Davies broke onto the national team stage and gave American fans hope that they had finally found a strong young striker to lead them into the next generation of the national team. Davies was the man to fill that void before the likes of Jozy Altidore and Juan Agudelo, amongst others, were handed the title of next great American goalscorer. It all started when Davies burst onto the scene at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, which was a landmark tournament for the United States as it advanced to the final against Brazil, where it suffered a heartbreaking defeat. MLS All-Star Game: AS Roma Handles MLS Side with Class in Kansas City

The MLS All-Star Game is supposed to be used as a measuring stick for America's top domestic league, gauging how its best does against some of the world's best. Last season, the All-Stars unleashed a surprising 3-2 victory over a Chelsea club in obvious preseason form. Wednesday night, Serie A giants Roma took the game seriously and brought their A-game in a 3-1 win against the star-studded MLS squad, who failed to measure up to their opponents in any of the 90 minutes played. The tone was set early in the match by the Italian side, as they exploited the high back line set by the Sporting Kansas City center-back pairing of Aurelien Collin and Matt Besler. As a beautiful run of play was started by Roma 'keeper Morgan De Sanctis, Besler and Collin began to creep up for an offsides trap. However, that plan backfired as one of Roma's new signings, Kevin Strootman, surged through and into the penalty area. Strootman's shot on goal deflected off Collin's leg and into the back of the net just four minutes into the match. Breaking Down the 2013 MLS Supporters’ Shield Race

If there was one thing we learned from the chaotic finishes across Major League Soccer on Saturday, it was that the race for the Supporters' Shield will end up being one of the most riveting in the history of the league. Last season, the San Jose Earthquakes ran away with the title in what was a dream, 66-point season for former manager Frank Yallop and Co. Now that the Earthquakes have faded away considerably, a new Supporters' Shield champion will be named at the end of the 2013 season.
